Talents We Didn’t Know We Had : A Writing for Wellbeing Community Project

03 June 2024

The sun shone outside as the residents and friends of Edward May Court gathered this May to celebrate a very special creative occasion celebrating a collection of creative writing by residents Eileen Phillips and Rita Lewis.

Tea and cake were enjoyed by all as the regular quiz afternoon was paused in order to hear Rita and Eileen proudly read a selection of their well-crafted fictional stories and personal reflective writing.

This celebration was the culmination of a Writing for Wellbeing community project, supported by SNG (Sovereign Network Group) and delivered in partnership with writing development agency ArtfulScribe.

Over the course of ten weekly sessions, Rita and Eileen met with facilitator Alice Flynn to explore different aspects of creative writing. Each session focused on a particular practice and writing skill, such as the use of metaphor and simile in poetry, how to heighten the dramatic tension of a story and how to use the senses to depict a vivid character. The sessions were also guided by the memories, talents and interests of Eileen and Rita. During the project many cups of tea, much laughter and a few tears and tender moments were shared - as well as all the wonderful creative writing which was then printed as a booklet for all to enjoy!

Thank you to those who made this project possible: SNG (Sovereign Network Group) and writing development agency ArtfulScribe.

Thank you especially to Rita and Eileen for their brilliant creativity and all that they shared in each session!
