In 2019 ArtfulScribe joined forces with SoCo Music Project, City Eye and Black Heritage Southampton to celebrate, commemorate and educate about the Empire Windrush and the contribution of the Windrush Generation to British economic, social and cultural life. Working with Aiysha Jahan, an Adult Third Culture Kid (ATCK) who grew up in Dubai and who has lived, studied, and taught in countries around the world, ArtfulScribe delivered a series of workshops to pupils in Years 1-6 at St Johns, Mount Pleasant Juniors, St Denys, and Bevois Town schools.
Aiysha shared her experience of growing up overseas and relocating in different nations and encouraged students to reflect on themes of home, belonging, and identity, working with Paddington Bear to inspire some wonderful poems from those taking part.
The project also saw Aiysha work with the Black Heritage Southampton community at Ropewalk Gardens and culminated with a poetry reading and discussion with Issa Farrah at Unity 101FM on the Vibrant Vibes radio show.
