John Hansard Gallery and ArtfulScribe are looking to recruit a Writer in Residence to devise, develop, and deliver a creative outcome that draws on practices and processes demonstrated by artists and projects at the Gallery from February - July 2021.
We are seeking an experienced writer and/or artist with a history of publishing, who is keen to position their writing within the context of a gallery, can respond to the Gallery’s exhibitions and events programme and the wider context of the city and the Solent region. This Residency represents a substantial opportunity for the selected writer to establish new networks and work in conjunction with the Gallery team, artists and audiences.
John Hansard Gallery and ArtfulScribe invite expressions of interest from writers and/or
artists who have both a knowledge of and interest in contemporary visual arts. The Gallery
would like to work with a pro-active, creative and flexible Writer-in-Residence who is also
open, and has experience of engaging directly with the public.
Your expression of interest should include a cover letter explaining your interest in this opportunity and proposed focus of the residency (max. 1,000 words), biography, along with links to any other relevant or online content and examples of recent writing practise to be submitted via email as a single PDF or Word document.
This opportunity includes a commitment of 25 paid days at a rate of £200 per day, inclusive of travel and any other costs. At least 70% of this time will be site-specific with hot-desking provided in John Hansard Gallery. Allocation of days will be spread over the residency timeline and agreed upon appointment. Should COVID 19 government guidelines restrict on-site attendance, alternative approaches for optimal impact will be determined.
As part of the residency the Writer-in-Residence will be expected to maintain a regular blog/journal/podcast and hold a series of public engagement activities that develop different voices within the gallery. The residency will culminate with an offer of publishing support from ArtfulScribe to produce a small experimental publication in conjunction with John Hansard Gallery. The Gallery is open to the form these could take with the potential for workshops, recitals, screenings, performances, pamphlets, bookworks, zines, etc.
If you have any questions or would like to apply using a different format, please contact: matt@artfulscribe.co.uk
Expressions of interest should be emailed to matt@artfulscribe.co.uk
Deadline for receipt of expressions of interest is Monday 4 January 2021 at 10am with interviews scheduled to take place on Wednesday 27th January 2021.
