Call Out: Diarists and Life Writers!

CALL OUT FOR DIARISTS AND LIFE WRITERS
In partnership with John Hansard Gallery

John Hansard Gallery and ArtfulScribe invite submissions from diarists, life-writers (or keepers of journals) to contribute towards a digital publication inspired by John Hansard Gallery’s current exhibition, Derek Jarman's Modern Nature (Until 26 February 2022). More information can be found here.

Modern Nature, The Journals of Derek Jarman, 1989-1990 is also a collection of Jarman’s musings and memories, a reflection on his life as a gay young man, to his career as an artist and filmmaker. He also comments on the mundane, day to day life and quiet meaning he derived from tending his garden at Prospect Cottage, Dungeness, Kent.

You can respond with a 400-word text on any aspect of your documenting process. This could be a short-form essay, a précis to a larger piece of work, example submissions from diary entries, or texts related to placemaking in written, visual, or audio form.

Please email your completed submission to matt@artfulscribe.co.uk, with ‘Derek Jarman’ in the email’s subject field.

Ten selected entries will each receive £100 to finalise their submission. Finalised works will form a digital broadcast via radio, podcast, and/or textual/visual online hosting.

The deadline for submissions is 10am Monday 7th February 2022.

A series of Masterclasses will also be offered as part of this project, and applicants will be invited to attend.

CALL OUT FOR YOUNG WRITERS

John Hansard Gallery and ArtfulScribe invite young writers to share diary entries and reflections on the diary process. These can be in any form, from digital, visual, audio or print. The entries will form part of a project celebrating our memory archives, the important and the everyday moments that mark the passing of our days. Open to ages 7-18 (age categories: 7-10, 11-14 and 15-18).

Please email your submissions (no more than 300 words) to matt@artfulscribe.co.uk, including your age and permission for ArtfulScribe and John Hansard Gallery to share your work digitally, online and/or in print. The deadline for applications is 10am Monday 7 February 2022.

Five entries from each age category will each receive a £20 book token and may be used to form a digital broadcast via radio, podcast, and/or social media and online platform.
