The idea of a men's writing group has resonated for a while. We've offered a women's writing group through ArtfulScribe for the past four or five years and the imbalance of representation becomes more prominent as time persists. Last week, news of another male suicide filtered through, adding a sense of gravitas and need for such an offer. So here it is.
This group is offered from a position of vulnerability. The aim is to create a supportive environment for men to meet, discuss, and create new writing, encouraging an exploration of contemporary perspectives of masculinity. What does it mean to be male in the 21st Century? How do other people cope with male identity in today's society? What support can we offer one another? What are appropriate modalities for such support?
The ask from participants is an open-minded attitude. You don't have to be a good writer, or to even identify as a writer, to take part. A willingness to turn up, to be there, to listen, share, and contribute in whatever way works for you is enough.
In the first instance, the group will be offered on a six-session, pilot-scheme, basis. I'll facilitate the opening sessions, which will hopefully lead towards creating a manifesto for group governance in the future. The shape of the group will very much be formed and based upon the needs of people taking part.
There is a pricing schedule, from 'pay what you can afford' through to £60 for the block (or £10 per session). As with all ArtfulScribe offers, money should never be a barrier to participation. The financial contribution, rather than representing a particular need, is seen as token of support for people who may not have the same financial means as more affluent members of our community. ArtfulScribe is a not-for-profit organisation, and money we raise through this kind of activity helps lever in additional resources from a range of funders, which, in turn, means our work can reach more people.
So if you'd like to be involved, or if you know anyone who might benefit from a weekly catch-up, particular during these times, in the spirit of togetherness, please do book a place, or share this post with people who might be interested and who might benefit from joining us. The first session is on 10th Feb and open to any men, young or old, with the means of digital access to the group.
Sessions will take place on 10/17/24 Feb and 3/10/17 March 2021 from 7-9pm.
See you on the other side.
Best wishes,
Matt
