NEW DIRECTIONS
Tuesday 21 June 2022
New Directions is an initiative bringing together arts organisations and schools in Southampton to provide inspirational experiences to young people through poetry, theatre, dance, music, and film, supported by the Police and Crime Commissioner for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

“Seeing the young people come out of their comfort zones was amazing.”
- Mrs Wareham, Oasis Sholing
The creative journey began with a series of multi-artform workshops taking place at Oasis Academy Sholing and Oasis Academy Lordshill (who ArtfulScribe worked with), as well as Polygon School, and Redbridge Community School. The project partners include SoCo Music Project, who developed the initiative, ArtfulScribe, Zoielogic, Mayflower Engage, and In Focus.

A final showcase at MAST Mayflower Studios celebrated students' work. Oasis Sholing presented a movement piece, in collaboration with Zoielogic, inspired by their written work, which accompanied a screening of visual art films they created, working with InFocus. Meanwhile, 10 students from Oasis Lordshill shared their personal and socially-conscious poetry, which was rooted in their experience of living in Southampton.

Matt Salvage (SoCo Music Project) ended the showcase saying, "I'm proud to see the young people on stage and screen showing everyone what they're made of."
New Directions is supported through the Safer Communities Fund, aiming to reduce offending and support victims, enabling people to avoid being drawn into the Criminal Justice System.

Oasis Lordshill said, "We are delighted with the progress made, and the dedication of our wonderful Year 10 students. Their high engagement and willingness to step out of their comfort zone has been commendable and exemplary."
