Surelines and D-Rift: Creative Writing Against Coastal Waste

In 2017 the United Nations declared 2021-2030 a Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. But what does this mean for local beaches? How can Creative Writing encourage a deepening awareness of coastal ecologies and encourage a commitment from beach-users towards behaviour change that will help protect coastal creatures and habitats for future generations?

ArtfulScribe is recruiting a team of writers to co-author and develop approaches aimed at inspiring behavioural change through arts interventions supported by university research.  We’d like to encourage environmental responsibility in line with both international ambitions and local policy aims, and measure the efficacy of Creative Writing as a change-maker, capable of conveying and challenging perspectives of the natural world.

This team of writers will attend two online preparatory workshops, creating links between arts and sciences, to help shape the design of new creative writing workshops and evaluation frameworks for people of different ages, to be delivered in person in late summer/autumn 2022. Writers will be paired with volunteers from local writing groups and courses as part of ArtfulScribe’s commitment towards developing sustainable regional writing ecologies, encouraging skills transfer, networking, and collaboration while developing evaluation data with university researchers to support future environmentally-based literature projects. Workshop outcomes will include material for a Surelines and D-Rift anthology and exhibition.

A fee inclusive of travel and other costs of £1000 is available for each writer, based on an estimated 32 hour commitment (spread over the course of the project). Priority will be given to applicants living in the Dorset and wider Solent region.

For application details and a project summary, please email matt@artfulscribe.co.uk. Application deadline: Friday 22nd July 1200hrs.

Surelines and D-Rift: Creative Writing Against Coastal Waste is designed in partnership with the Southampton Institute for Arts and Humanities (SIAH).

On these mini-adventures for wellbeing, we'll create new writing in response to the natural landscape, our movement in the wild and our connection to the ancient lands we walk on.
