Haiku

Festive farewell

On Saturday 2nd December we welcomed the Junior and Young Writers to Southampton’s MAST for the last creative writing sessions of the year.

During the last 10 weeks we’ve explored autumn through haikus; connected with nature at a visit to the park; developed stories from photographs; dived into the world of Crockodogopig; tackled quick- fire writing activities with local author, Ali Sparkes; written poetry on the theme of refuge; tried our hand at epistolary writing; and embraced writing for newspapers.

At Saturday’s final gathering of 2023, we played games, put pen to paper and cemented the bonds we have made across term. With our Young Writers, we had fun with back-to-back storytelling, producing wild tales of creative nonsense, while with our Juniors we raised our energies with physical warm-ups.

Embracing the festive vibes of this time of year, we asked the community to write flash fiction about receiving gifts, inviting them to embrace show, don’t tell, using descriptive language and imagery to evoke the reader’s imagination. Some stellar phrases included, ‘a ruby red spread’, ‘with endless possibilities it will be useful later’, and ‘a single drop of snow could wreak havoc on our street’.

As the morning came to its close, we asked both groups to look back through their notebooks, at the writing they have produced since September. We offered editing time, followed by sharing in both sessions, to celebrate the Junior and Young Writers’ brilliant creations. We then said goodbye for December, and for 2023, ready to greet them again in the new year.
