SO:To Speak SO:Write Showcase

02 November 2018

7.45pm

A celebratory showcase featuring writers from the SO:Write project with an hour-long headline set from multi-talented poet, producer, musician and MC, Dizraeli.

Producer, poet, MC and multi-instrumentalist, Dizraeli pushes the boundaries of hiphop, drawing on grime, jazz, garage and West African percussion to craft a genre all his own.

His music has been played on BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra, Radio 2, Radio 3 and 6Music.

“Touching, funny stories of riots, atheism and Englishness…
Dizraeli embodies 21st Century folk”
The Independent

Shaped as an MC in 1990’s Bristol, Dizraeli is also one of the leading lights of the UK spoken word scene, having worked with Kate Tempest, Scroobius Pip and many others.

Dizraeli won the BBC Radio 4 national poetry slam and the Farrago UK Slam Championship, and has written several hiphop plays including the award winning Rebel Cell with Baba Brinkman (Musical Theatre Matters Award, Spirit of the Fringe), with which he toured around the UK, and to pre-Arab Spring Cairo and the West Bank in Palestine. He’s supported Saul Williams and Blackalicious on their UK tours, and Mos Def and the Pharcyde for their headline London shows. He has also toured in France, Germany, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Senegal, Kosovo, Poland, the Czech Republic and the USA.

After releasing his debut solo album Engurland (City Shanties) in 2009, Dizraeli led the groundbreaking hiphop/folk band Dizraeli & The Small Gods for 6 years, winning the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition and releasing the acclaimed album Moving In The Dark on ECC Records. He has collaborated with folk legends Chris Wood, Eliza Carthy, Philippe Barnes and the Imagined Village, to name a few.

“Folk or hip hop? I don’t know, but Dizraeli makes me realise how wonderful it is to
hear real English – fluent, witty and arresting”.
The Times Saturday Review

As a composer / producer, Dizraeli scored the leftfield comedy drama series Tripped for E4 and was nominated for the Paul Hamlyn Award in 2016. He has produced remixes for Tru Thoughts and Slept On, and most recently a commission for The Verb on BBC Radio 3.

In 2018 he’s back with The Unmaster: his first self-produced album and a collection of songs unlike anything you’ve heard before. Watch this space.
